Maria Sharapova - Career Grand Slam!

The career achievement of all four major championships in one discipline is termed a Career Grand Slam in that discipline. Since the beginning of the open era, four men and six women have done it (Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal; Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova).

Top-seed Maria Sharapova breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Swedish qualifier Sofia Arvidsson to easily win the Memphis Championships women's title on Saturday.

The dominant Russian did not drop a set during the tournament as she won her 21st career title.

"I feel great. I came here for matches - I got five and I got the win, so it was a good week," Sharapova told reporters.

"I served and returned well, two things that are very important indoors."

Arvidsson, who won at Memphis in 2006, lost nine successive games from 2-2 in the first set.

Now ranked 14, the statuesque 22-year-old said the injury layoff taught her never to take anything for granted.

"You realise how fortunate you are to get back," she told reporters at the Hong Kong Classic team tournament.

"Obviously I stepped away because I had to. It was frustrating -- very frustrating. And boring ... But there is no better healer than time."

And with the competitive juices again flowing, she is confident that she can make an impact in Melbourne.

"I keep getting stronger. I'm ready for the challenges in Australia -- mentally and physically. I have great memories of the tournament and I'm sure it will be great to be back," she said.

"When you're doing something you love, you're a champion, you're good at it and you don't have it for a while. To get it back, to get that feeling back as a competitor, it's always great."

Despite having slipped down the rankings, Sharapova, a three-time major winner, insists she is not focused on getting the accolade back, instead just concentrating on staying healthy and winning matches.

"I don't think too much about rankings, or even look them," she said on her website.

"I know if I can stay healthy, good things will happen on the tennis court."

"It was a tough start today. Jelena started off so strong," she admitted. "It was my second final of the year and I was a bit nervous.

"But I played well enough this week to know I could give her a good match. I just wanted to keep fighting out there and unfortunately Jelena had to stop.

"I wish her a speedy recovery, and hopefully we can play in the final here next year."
